Two dogs go out through the back door and start a circuit of a garden they have never seen before, which takes four minutes and gets repeated at intervals for the rest of the week. Inside, the living room is built round a broad stone fireplace with a log burner set into it, and that is the warmest corner in the house; by the second evening a dog will have claimed it. The kitchen runs off the far side. Upstairs holds three bedrooms, a king and two rooms of smaller beds, with a bathroom on one side of them and a shower room on the other.
The appeal here is refusing to choose between a coast and a city. Backworth is a quiet village with a golf course at the end of it, and it sits between the two, 9 miles from one and 4 from the other. East, the sand starts at Whitley Bay and runs south to Tynemouth Longsands beneath a headland with a ruined priory standing on it. North of that, Seaton Sluice keeps a narrow harbour cut through solid rock, with St Mary's lighthouse on its tidal island beyond. A coast path joins the whole lot together, and dogs have the greater part of that sand to themselves outside the central stretches in high summer.
