There is a private air strip here, and you arrange it with the owner. Not a sentence this collection has previously had cause to write. Aero Cottage takes four at Barlow near Dronfield, dog friendly, a king and a twin over one bathroom, with a secure lawn outside and two dogs welcome. Most of what makes a place work for a dog is a fence and a door; the aeroplanes are a bonus nobody asked for.

The drive in is private and gated, the lawn secure and large, with a patio at one end and open country running away past the boundary. Underfloor heating goes through the ground floor, which two dogs identify inside four minutes and decline to leave. There is a downstairs WC as well as the bathroom, which in a house where boots come off at the back door is the arrangement that matters.

This is the edge of the Peak without the middle of it, which suits some parties better. Barlow sits on the ridge between Chesterfield and the moors, near enough to both to make either an afternoon, and the lanes out of it drop into wooded cloughs. Two dogs get a secure lawn to be turned out into and a great deal of ground the moment the gate opens.

3 miles south the Linacre reservoirs lie in a wooded valley in a chain of three, with a path round the whole lot and no road anywhere near the water. Chesterfield is beyond, where the church spire corkscrews 45 degrees and leans several feet off centre, and nobody has ever entirely explained it. Two dogs get lakeside woodland and a town with the oddest roof in England standing over it.
