Aurora - Matlock Bath

Matlock Bath, Derbyshire

A five bedroom house for eight at Matlock Bath in the Derwent gorge, with an enclosed garden and a lawn behind it and three dogs welcome.

Book now

Matlock Bath is a seaside resort that never managed to be near the sea, a Victorian promenade of arcades and fish shops laid along the floor of a limestone gorge. Aurora is a five bedroom dog friendly house in the middle of it, taking eight people and three dogs. Behind it there is a small lawn as well as a patio, all of it enclosed, which is more ground than most village streets can offer three dogs.

Five bedrooms to two bathrooms is the shape of a tall Victorian house rather than an oversight, and it works because the rooms are stacked. A burner heats the room at the end of the day. With three dogs on the booking the garden does the heavy lifting: enclosed, level enough for a ball, and reached without crossing anything.

This suits eight people who want a village with something in it. The cafes and arcades stay open along one street, the gorge walls stand over the roofs, and the river runs through the middle. Three dogs go straight out of the front door and up into woodland inside ten minutes, which is not true of many places that also have a chip shop.

Above the village, the Heights of Abraham stand at the top of a cable car that lifts you over the gorge in a few minutes, with show caverns cut into the hill and the whole valley laid out below. The woods climb both sides of it underneath, steep and shaded, and that is where three dogs end up: a hillside of paths going up through the trees, none of them far from the door.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Aurora - Matlock Bath dog friendly?

Yes, Aurora welcomes up to three dogs. The house has an enclosed garden with a lawn behind it, reached without crossing any roads, which gives dogs somewhere to stretch out the moment you arrive.

  • Are dogs allowed at Aurora - Matlock Bath year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth checking directly with the host if you're planning a visit at a particular time of year. What the description does make clear is that dogs are central to how the property works, not an afterthought.

  • What should I know before visiting Aurora - Matlock Bath with my dog?

The enclosed garden handles the basics well — it's level enough for a ball and reached straight from the house. Beyond that, woodland walks are within ten minutes of the front door, and the steep wooded hillsides of the Derwent gorge, including the paths below the Heights of Abraham, are where most dogs end up spending their time.
