Seatoller is the last hamlet in Borrowdale, a handful of slate houses at the foot of the Honister pass. Bell Crags is one of them, a dog friendly cottage for four and a pair of dogs, named after an east facing crag on the fell above. Walking starts at the door in every direction, which in this valley is not a figure of speech.
Inside it behaves like a proper Lakeland cottage: an open fire set into slate, a dining room off it, a kitchen behind. A king and a twin share the bathroom upstairs, and a small hidden room at the top of the stairs is what children find first. The garden is lawn and patio and enclosed, with a gate at the bottom onto Hause Gill as it runs past, and any dog that likes water will have located it by the second morning.
People who came to walk get the most from it. Seathwaite, Honister and the Borrowdale fells are all reached on foot from the gate, and the cottage handles the other half of the day: a fire, somewhere to hang everything, and a dog asleep on the hearth by eight. Two dogs in a cottage this size is generous, and the garden holds them unwatched.
Borrowdale is the reason to be here. Buttermere lies over the pass with a circuit that fills a morning, the slate mine at Honister is a walk up the road, and the head of Derwentwater opens out a few miles down the valley. Keswick sits at the far end of the lake for supplies and a proper meal, and dogs are welcome on all of it given a wide berth round the sheep.
