Thirlmere Shoreline and Helvellyn Viewpoint Walk
Cumbria
Thirlmere is the long reservoir hidden beneath the western flank of the Helvellyn range, wrapped in dense conifer and native woodland and edged by a waymarked shoreline path. This gentle route follows the eastern shore from Swirls car park, with views up to the Helvellyn ridge and Raven Crag, returning along United Utilities' quiet forest tracks through the trees. It is a perfectly dog friendly outing, largely off busy roads and with plenty of water access for a swim.
Park at Swirls car park on the A591 (pay and display, open all day), which has toilets and a cafe van in summer. The United Utilities estate allows dogs on lead around the reservoir, and the neighbouring farmland is stocked with sheep, so dogs must be on a short lead throughout. The path mixes forest track, stone path and a few rooty woodland sections, with minor road crossings at either end. The St John's in the Vale shop at the north end of Thirlmere, and the cafes at Keswick just up the road, are dog friendly. No swimming is permitted in the reservoir itself, but there are small becks beside the trail.
