Friar’s Crag and Derwentwater Lakeshore (Keswick)

Cumbria

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10Excellent lakeshore access, mostly off-lead walking and easy underfoot; a reliable and rewarding walk for dogs of all ages

Friar's Crag is one of the Lake District's most celebrated viewpoints — a wooded promontory jutting into Derwentwater with views across the lake to Borrowdale and the surrounding fells. This 4.5 km circular route follows the lakeshore south from Keswick to the crag and continues along the western shore, passing boathouse jetties, sheltered bays and open grassy sections before looping back through town. The walking is easy throughout with just 56 metres of elevation gain, making it accessible for all abilities while still delivering a proper Lakeland experience.

This dog friendly walk is a treat for water-loving dogs, with multiple access points for paddling along the lakeshore. Off-lead potential is high on the open lakeshore sections, though leads are needed near the car park and through Keswick itself. The overhanging oaks and damp leaf litter along the shore create a rich scent environment that dogs find thoroughly engaging. The gentle terrain makes this particularly well suited to puppies, older dogs, or those recovering from injury who still deserve a beautiful walk. Keswick has excellent post-walk facilities including several dog-friendly cafes and pubs.
