Latrigg Summit Walk from Keswick

Cumbria

Dog Friendly Rating:9/10The easiest Wainwright in the Lakes, with the best view over Derwent Water, made for dog friendly families and older dogs.

Latrigg is the little hill above Keswick with one of the finest viewpoints in the Lake District: a green saddle high over Derwent Water with Skiddaw at its back and the whole Borrowdale skyline spread out in front. From the high car park the summit is a gentle twenty minute stroll along a wide accessible path, but you can also start from Keswick itself for a longer version through Brundholme Wood. It is one of the most dog friendly hills in the Lakes, short enough for small dogs and older dogs, with views that more than justify the effort.

Park at the Latrigg car park at the top of Gale Road, free of charge. Sheep graze the summit and flanks and ground-nesting birds breed on the top, so dogs must be on a lead from the gate onwards. The terrain is wide smooth path all the way to the summit, wheelchair and pushchair friendly, and there is no scrambling or exposure. There are no facilities on the hill itself, but Keswick a mile below has every possible dog friendly pub, cafe and public toilet, plus Derwent Water for a swim afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Latrigg Summit Walk from Keswick dog friendly?

Latrigg rates 9.5 out of 10 on our dog friendliness scale, making it one of the most dog friendly walks in the Lake District. The path to the summit is wide, smooth and easy underfoot, with no scrambling or exposed sections, so it suits small dogs and older dogs just as well as younger, more energetic ones. Keswick, just a mile below, has a good range of dog friendly cafes and pubs to round off the day.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Latrigg Summit Walk from Keswick?

Dogs need to be kept on a lead from the gate onwards throughout the walk. Sheep graze the summit and flanks, and ground-nesting birds breed on the top, so this is a firm requirement rather than just a recommendation. If your dog fancies a swim, Derwent Water is close by in Keswick afterwards.

  • What should I know before visiting Latrigg Summit Walk from Keswick with my dog?

There are no facilities on the hill itself, so bring water for your dog, especially in warmer months. Parking is free at the Latrigg car park at the top of Gale Road, but it starts filling by 9.30am in summer, so an earlier start is worth it. The walk is accessible and straightforward — from the car park the summit is around a twenty minute stroll, though you can start from Keswick itself through Brundholme Wood for a longer outing.
