The Warren is a beautiful, contemporary cottage in a secluded position at the foot of Catbells, with rare lake frontage gardens on Derwentwater and a wealth of walks from the doorstep. It sleeps eight with one dog welcome, and from this dog friendly cottage there is access to a landing stage and the Keswick launch at Brandlehow, so the car can stay put.
Built as a holiday home by the Vicar of Newlands, it has been sympathetically renovated to be light, airy and deceptively spacious. The door opens into the utility, great for muddy coats and boots and for rinsing off muddy paws. A WC and a shower room are here too, handy after fell walks. Past a double and a bunk bedroom, the hall reaches a lounge flooded with light, its wood burner the centre of things and the dog asleep before it.
Off the lounge are two more doubles and the kitchen and diner, which rises to a vaulted ceiling, its table set before floor to ceiling windows and French doors opening to the patio. With no TV, evenings go to cards. The enclosed rear garden has a sheltered patio, and across the drive the spectacular front garden has a slate picnic table looking over the lawn to the lake, with a winding path down to a pebble beach and the dog beside you.
The view runs over the water to Walla Crag, Bleaberry Fell and Blencathra, and deer and owls appear at dusk under a sky full of stars. A popular footpath runs around the lake for walks with the dog, Grange, the Jaws of Borrowdale, is 1.5 miles away, and Keswick, the outdoor capital, is 5 miles off or a launch ride away.
