1 / 24The Warren - Keswick
Manesty, Cumbria
A four bedroom cottage for eight on the quiet western shore of Derwentwater, with an enclosed rear garden, a lakeside garden across the track and Catbells above it, one dog welcome.
Manesty is barely a place at all, a handful of houses on the quiet western shore of Derwentwater below Catbells, woodland behind and the lake in front. The Warren stands among them, built as a holiday house by the Vicar of Newlands and still in his family four generations on. It is dog friendly for eight and one dog, and its ground runs down to the water.
The door opens into a utility, the right way round at this address: coats hung, boots abandoned, the dog rinsed down in a shower room with a wet room drain, all of it before anybody reaches the house proper. The hall runs past two bedrooms to a lounge full of light with a wood burner at its centre, and the kitchen beyond it lifts into a vaulted ceiling with tall windows over the water.
The point of The Warren is that the car stays where you leave it. Catbells goes up from a few hundred metres off, the lakeshore path passes the gate, and the Keswick launch calls near enough to carry you into town and back. No television in the house, which stops being a shock by the second night, and one dog gets the run of a place built for eight.
The rear garden is the enclosed one, with the sheltered patio on it. Across the private track the front garden is bigger and rougher, lawn and trees and a slate picnic table looking through the reeds to Walla Crag, with a path winding down to a small pebble beach where a dog can get into the lake. No street lights at Manesty, so the stars arrive properly, and deer and owls at dusk.
