Johns Cottage is reached through an archway off the middle of Keswick, and it is not laid out like anything else on the street. The ground floor holds the kitchen, a sun room, a twin bedroom and the family bathroom. The lounge is upstairs. Four sleep here, a pair of dogs come too, and the enclosed patio garden behind means a dog friendly week in the centre of a busy town with a gate to shut.

The upside down arrangement works better than it sounds. That first floor lounge sits under a vaulted ceiling with beams over it and a fire below, lifted clear of the noise of the street, with the second bedroom and a shower room alongside. Downstairs the kitchen and diner has a tiled floor and windows on two sides, and the sun room off it is where both dogs will decide the day is happening.

Ten past six, and the sun room has both dogs in it, laid out on tiles that have been warm since three. Somebody is upstairs with the fire lit and a book, having climbed once and decided against coming down again. The patio door stands open on the garden. Beyond the archway the town is getting on with its evening, and none of it is any of this house's business.

Keswick is through the arch: galleries, plenty to eat, and the Theatre by the Lake down beside the water. North of town Bassenthwaite spreads out under Skiddaw with woodland along its shore and ospreys nesting above it. West the road climbs to Honister and drops to Buttermere and Crummock Water. Dogs walk all of it, and the nearest of it starts at the mouth of the arch.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Johns Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Johns Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. The cottage has a sun room with tiled floors that the dogs will likely claim as their own, and an enclosed patio garden with a gate — a real bonus when you're staying in the middle of a busy town like Keswick.

  • Are dogs allowed at Johns Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and the cottage is set up to work well for them at any time of year. That said, it's always worth confirming directly with the owner when you book.

  • What should I know before visiting Johns Cottage with my dog?

The cottage takes a maximum of two dogs, so it's not suited to larger groups of pets. The enclosed patio garden and tiled sun room make it a practical and comfortable base, and from the archway outside you're straight into Keswick and within easy reach of walks around Bassenthwaite, Buttermere, Crummock Water, and the wider Lake District fells.
