Castlerigg is less a village than a shoulder of land between Keswick and Thirlmere, a few farms along a lane with Derwentwater below and the fells rising behind. Castlerigg Farmhouse stands at the end of that lane, dog friendly accommodation for nine with room for two dogs, and the fellside begins where the tarmac stops, climbing towards Walla Crag and on to Ashness Bridge.

The lounge takes the view down the lake through a shuttered window with the wood burner beneath it. A small conservatory sits alongside for a book and a quieter hour, and the dining room seats everybody with maps and games stacked in a corner. The room that really decides the week, though, is the utility: a boot rack, a dehumidifier and an aerial dryer, which between them handle whatever nine people and two dogs carry home off the fell.

Large families and parties of walkers get the most from this one, and it is set up for them down to the water and feeding bowls left out for the dogs. Three king bedrooms take the first floor, two of them facing the lake, and a triple under original oak beams sits above. The garden is fully enclosed with a swing in it and Borrowdale opening away in front.

Keswick lies 1.5 miles down the hill for shops, boats and a meal out. Above the house the ground climbs steadily to Walla Crag, which holds one of the great views in the northern Lakes at the top of it, and beyond that the path drops to Ashness Bridge and the eastern shore. Dogs are welcome across the whole of it, given room around the sheep.
