Castlerigg Farmhouse is a traditional 18th century farmhouse with exposed beams, sash windows and views of Derwentwater, a dog friendly base for nine guests and two dogs. At the end of the lane the fellside begins, leading towards Walla Crag and on to the much photographed Ashness Bridge, so the dogs are on the fells from the first morning.
Through the porch, the lounge is a cosy room with a warming wood burner and a shuttered window looking out to the lake and fells beyond. A conservatory offers a quieter place for a book, and the light, bright kitchen has an electric range oven. The utility room is set up for the fells, with a boot rack, a dehumidifier and an aerial dryer for coats and boots, so walkers and dogs alike come home to a house ready for them.
Evening meals happen in the separate dining room, with its spectacular views and a good stock of maps, games and DVDs. On the first floor are three spacious king bedrooms, two of them overlooking the lake and fells, and on the second floor a triple sits under original oak roof beams with its own adjoining bathroom. Outside, the pretty lawn garden with table and chairs and an outdoor play area is a wonderful spot for drinks in the evening, with the dogs close by after a day on the hill.
Footpaths and cycle trails spread out in every direction from the house. Castlerigg Stone Circle is 1.5 miles north, a fine walk with the dogs, and Keswick, also 1.5 miles away, has museums, the Puzzling Place and a climbing wall. The Derwentwater Launches show off the scenery from the water.
