Butterleigh, Devon
An organic Devon dairy farm with panoramic meadow views, five canvas hideaways including a ten person tent and two with hot tubs, where two dogs are welcome on a lead.
Jayne and Robert Lammie milk 200 organic Friesian cows at Billingsmoor, on a Duchy of Cornwall estate deep in the Devon countryside, and watching the twice daily milking is an unmissable part of any stay. The canvas hideaways sit in the middle of a meadow with panoramic views of the rolling countryside, and two dogs can share this dog friendly escape, kept on a lead around the working dairy.
There are four hideaways for six, two of them with their own hot tub, and the only ten person hideaway in the United Kingdom for a bigger family or a group staying together. Every tent runs on its wood burning stove rather than mains power, and in the two with hot tubs a soak under the starry sky ends the day before everyone, dog included, turns in.
The farm walk and the visits to the milking parlour show children how food gets from field to fork, and the farm's woodland is a safe and natural place for them to build dens and let their imaginations run wild. The pizza oven is fired up during your stay, and a dog on the lead has a whole working dairy to take in.
Beyond the farm, Billingsmoor is close to both the north and south coasts, with Exmouth's famous family beach among plenty of sandy choices. Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks are 20 miles away for days of heather moor and oak forest with the dog, Knightshayes has huge gardens and parkland, and Exeter is a short drive for its cathedral.

Book with Feather Down FarmsFrequently Asked Questions
Is Billingsmoor Farm dog friendly?
Yes, Billingsmoor Farm welcomes up to two dogs in its canvas hideaways. It's a working organic dairy farm, so dogs must be kept on the lead at all times on site — something the farm is clear is non-negotiable given the cattle moving between parlour and field.
Are dogs allowed at Billingsmoor Farm year round?
The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the farm directly to confirm availability for your dates. As a working farm, access policies are tied to the day-to-day running of the site rather than the time of year.
What should I know before visiting Billingsmoor Farm with my dog?
The lead rule is firm throughout the farm — this is a live dairy operation with cows regularly moving around, so there's no flexibility on that. There's no enclosed garden, but there is woodland on the farm where a dog on a long line can get a good run of it, and the surrounding lanes and footpaths make for quiet, unhurried walks. If you're hoping for off-lead freedom, the wider Devon countryside — with Exmoor and Dartmoor both around 20 miles away — is your best bet.
