Book now

Canal View Cottage was built in the 1800s to sit opposite what was then a newly built canal, and it still does, in a convenient central spot in Talybont-on-Usk. It is a stone cottage full of character and a dog friendly stay for five people and two dogs, with village pubs along the canal banks and walks all the way up into the Brecon Beacons.

Exposed brick and brightly but sensitively coloured decor set the tone. A pleasant galley kitchen has all you need for a family meal, served in a rustic dining room with a charming stone mantel, oak beams and original flag floors. The generously sized sitting room has an exposed stone fireplace housing a wood burner, and come the evening both dogs end up in front of it.

The three plush bedrooms are spread over two floors, a cosy single and a double on the first floor with the nautical family bathroom and a separate WC, and a master double at the top under sloping ceilings, with unbeatable views over the canal and the valleys. Outside, the private enclosed garden has furniture for a glass of wine while the dogs and children play safely, and there is storage for mountain bikes.

The Star and The White Hart are on the canal bank, the nearest under 100 metres away, for a drink after a long walk, and The Travellers Rest is the place to book a hearty meal. Further afield there are walks all the way up into the Brecon Beacons for the dogs, the waterfalls at Lower Blaen y Glyn are spectacular, and Brecon is a short drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Canal View Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Canal View Cottage welcomes dogs — up to two are catered for. The cottage has an enclosed private garden where dogs can roam safely while you eat outside, and the canal towpath right on the doorstep makes for an easy, level walk in either direction.

  • Are dogs allowed at Canal View Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owner directly to confirm availability for your travel dates. Given the towpath and surrounding hills, it's a great base for dogs whatever the season.

  • What should I know before visiting Canal View Cottage with my dog?

The cottage accommodates up to two dogs, and the enclosed garden gives them somewhere secure to stretch out without you worrying about the canal nearby. The Brecon Canal towpath runs for miles in both directions from the village — flat, shaded and ideal for a no-fuss dog walk — and if you fancy something more ambitious, the paths up Pen y Fan are within easy reach of Talybont-on-Usk.
