Croes Vaen is a magnificent Grade II listed country home in the Arts and Crafts Tudor style, set in established grounds in a peaceful Monmouthshire hamlet, and it welcomes ten guests and two dogs. Graded five stars, with a private hot tub, a sauna and a games room, this dog friendly house gives family and friends room to relax together, and well marked footpaths, Offa's Dyke among them, leave from the front door.

Up a private drive and set back behind mature rose beds, the house opens into an entrance hall of tall ceilings and intricate ceiling detail. The formal lounge has dual aspect mullion windows across the grounds and a wood burning stove, the dining room has a bespoke oak table for ten, and the breakfast room, with its mirrored cocktail cabinet, is the place for drinks before supper. With three wood burners in the house, the two dogs are never short of a warm spot.

Five bedrooms with vibrant wallpapers share the first floor with two generously sized bathrooms, and downstairs a pool table and a vintage arcade game fill the games room. Mature gardens surround the house, with covered dining, a courtyard hot tub for eight and a sauna, and an enclosed paddock with fruit trees, and the two dogs will enjoy every corner while the barbecue is lit.

Monmouth, 4 miles away, has its ancient bridge and independent shops, and The Rolls of Monmouth Golf Course is right next door. Abergavenny and Ross-on-Wye are a little further, the River Wye has kayaking and paddleboarding, and the ancient forests of the Forest of Dean, 12 miles off, give two dogs plenty to explore.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Croes Vaen dog friendly?

Yes, Croes Vaen welcomes up to two dogs. It's a proper country house setup rather than a holiday cottage, so there's real space for them — the hall in particular is where dogs tend to settle, being the room everyone passes through. Outside, there's an enclosed paddock with fruit trees and an established garden, both open to dogs.

  • Are dogs allowed at Croes Vaen year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth checking directly with the owner when you book. What is clear is that dogs are a considered part of the experience here, with outdoor space and a house layout that accommodates them comfortably.

  • What should I know before visiting Croes Vaen with my dog?

The house accepts a maximum of two dogs, so it's worth confirming that when you book if you're bringing more than one. The enclosed paddock and gardens give dogs room to roam safely, and footpaths leave the estate itself in three directions — so you're not reliant on driving anywhere for a good walk. Symonds Yat Rock is around 6 miles away if you want a bigger outing, with riverside paths and a well-known limestone viewpoint above the Wye.
