Five people, three bedrooms and two dogs, all on one floor. One Dorchester Drive is the biggest of the dog friendly cottages round the Cross Keys Inn at Whitechapel, on the Lancashire edge of the Forest of Bowland, and it has a garden of its own with a fence round it.

There is a single step at the door and nothing to climb after that. The living, dining and kitchen space is one open room, and French doors lead straight out of it onto the enclosed garden, where there is furniture for the people and room for two dogs to go and investigate the hedges while the car is still being unloaded. The owners put out doggy extras, so the dogs have been thought of before anybody arrives.

This is the one to pick with children. Two double bedrooms and a single sit along the same floor as everything else, a travel cot and highchair are there if asked for, and the bath has a shower over it for the muddy end of the day. The inn is part of the same hamlet and welcomes families and dogs alike, which means supper can be somebody else's job and the dogs can come too.

Beacon Fell Country Park is the nearest big walk, a wooded hill in the Bowland foothills with paths looping round the top and wide views over the Fylde. Clitheroe and its Norman castle keep are an easy drive east for a morning out, and the Bowland Wild Boar Park near Chipping keeps younger members of the party happy while the dogs wait in the shade.
