Curlews

Winterton-on-Sea, Norfolk

Three dogs and four people at Winterton-on-Sea, in a cottage with a fully enclosed lawn at the front and a rear deck that opens straight onto the dunes.

The owners call both of this cottage's outdoor spaces enclosed and one of them still has a way out. The front lawn is the fully enclosed one, barbecue and shed standing on it. The deck at the back is enclosed too, and the same sentence gives it direct access onto the dunes behind, which as far as three dogs go is a gate. Curlews finds room for four and a fifth across three bedrooms at Winterton-on-Sea, dog friendly, and three dogs are allowed.

Downstairs is a living room with large windows and a lot of light, a dining room past that seating everybody at once, and a kitchen laid out to cook a real meal in. The bathroom is on this floor, a shower over the bath. A utility holds the washer dryer, which with three dogs and the sand half a mile off runs most days.

Above are two kings, one looking straight out over the dunes and the other coming apart into twins, with a single beyond them and a cloakroom to save the trip down. The cottage was renovated in 2023 and has the finish of somewhere thought about rather than gradually added to. The deck at the back holds a summer house and seating, and three dogs are the reason to know which door is which.

The dunes run behind the village and carry on north towards Horsey, five miles up, a walk rather than a drive for anybody with the legs. The village keeps a tea room, a shop and a pub that takes dogs. Inland the Broads open into rivers, lakes and marsh with boats and kayaks for hire. Three dogs get dune at the back door and water in two entirely different forms.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Curlews dog friendly?

Yes, Curlews welcomes up to three dogs. The cottage has a fully enclosed front lawn as well as a rear deck that opens directly onto the dunes, so there's plenty of outdoor space for them to enjoy.

  • Are dogs allowed at Curlews year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, but we'd recommend confirming directly with the owner when you book, particularly if you're planning a visit during busier periods.

  • What should I know before visiting Curlews with my dog?

The front lawn is fully enclosed, but the rear deck — while described as enclosed — has a gate that leads directly onto the dunes, so it's worth being aware of that if your dogs are likely to make a dash for it. A utility room with a washer dryer is available, which comes in handy given the sandy beach is just half a mile away. The village pub also takes dogs, and the dunes behind the cottage connect to a walking route that stretches north to Horsey, around five miles up the coast.
