Gable End Cottage

Kelling, Norfolk

A two bedroom cottage for four at Kelling on the north Norfolk coast, with an enclosed garden you cross to reach the front door, a wood burner and one dog welcome.

The way in is through the garden. There is no path round the side of Gable End Cottage and no hall to arrive in first: you open a gate, cross an enclosed garden and step in at the kitchen, so a dog is inside a fence before it is inside the house. Dog friendly, sleeping four at Kelling across two bedrooms, with one dog welcome and a burner in the lounge.

The owners ask that the dog stays downstairs and say so in advance rather than leaving it to be found out. It is no hardship, because downstairs is where everything is: kitchen, dining table, lounge, burner, and the garden door out of the middle of them. The landing and bedrooms above have low ceilings in places and the second bed is reachable from one side, so upstairs was never the interesting floor.

What the cottage is for is a week of leaving it. Two people or four, a burner waiting at the end of the day, a village small enough that the walk starts wherever you point yourself. Kelling has heath behind it, gorse and birch and sand underfoot on high ground, and the sea a short way in front, which between them cover what a dog wants from a holiday.

The shore at Salthouse is a shingle bank with marsh behind it, and the coast path runs along the top of that bank for miles either way. It is a strange stretch, more water and reed than sand, sea on one side and grazing marsh on the other. A dog gets long level walking and a great deal of it before anybody thinks about turning round.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Gable End Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Gable End Cottage welcomes one dog. The setup works well for dogs from the moment you arrive — you open a gate into an enclosed garden before you even reach the front door, so your dog is safely within a fence before stepping inside.

  • Are dogs allowed at Gable End Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions on dogs, but nothing in the property details suggests otherwise. It's always worth checking directly with the owners to confirm availability for your dates.

  • What should I know before visiting Gable End Cottage with my dog?

The owners ask that dogs stay downstairs, and they make this clear upfront rather than leaving it as a surprise on arrival. That's not much of a restriction in practice — downstairs is where the kitchen, dining table, lounge, wood burner and garden door all are, so it's very much the heart of the cottage. One dog is welcome, so if you're travelling with more than one, it's worth getting in touch with the owners before booking.
