The patio looks straight out over a fishing pool, and between the two lies a private enclosed lawn. The order matters: water for the view, a fence in front of it, and a dog let out on the grass without anybody having to find the edge first. Heron Lodge takes four at Ashford Bowdler. It is dog friendly, it carries five stars, and both bedrooms have a bathroom to themselves. A view of water with a boundary in front of it is the arrangement you want and not the one you usually get.
The lodge was built new for this rather than converted into it, which shows in the doors. They slide rather than swing, they open the living space onto the terrace end to end, and the floor runs through at one level. Two dog bowls and a few treats are waiting. Late on, the doors are back and the pool has gone the colour of the sky. Somebody is at the table outside with a coat pulled over what they were wearing indoors, a fire is lit in the room behind them, and one dog has picked the doorway because it is the only spot that is both. Nothing on this water moves fast enough to be worth barking at.
Below the lodge the Teme swings under a sandstone bluff at Ashford Carbonell and runs south with meadows either side, well downstream of the town and quieter for it. Bircher Common lies the other way, 4 miles off, bracken and old oaks on National Trust ground open in every direction. One dog gets a river to follow and a common to cross.
