Hillview stands on the owners' working sheep and dairy farm at Gateside, near Beith in North Ayrshire, with open countryside all round it. It is a detached, single storey cottage for four, renovated throughout, and it is dog friendly in a practical way: both dogs stay at no charge, and there is somewhere outside to wash off dogs and boots alike.

A lawned garden, enclosed, surrounds a patio with furniture, the barbecue and a hot tub for six that belongs to the cottage alone. This is sheep country and a working farm, and the owners' rule is that dogs stay on the lead at all times; plan the week around it. For a dog that is used to walking on the lead, the lanes and the farm views make up for it.

Five steps lead up to the front door, and then it is all one floor. In the living room there is a wood burner, first logs supplied, the kitchen and dining room have an air fryer among everything else, and the bedrooms are a king size and a pair of zip and link singles that join into a super king. There is a bath and a separate shower. An outbuilding holds pool, table tennis and table football, for the part of the evening when the dogs are asleep.

Lochwinnoch is close, with Castle Semple Loch and its country park, and the Ayrshire coast is a short drive west, with the beach at Irvine and ferries out to Cumbrae and Arran. Culzean Castle's wooded country park runs down to the shore further south. Glasgow is within easy reach for a day without the dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Hillview dog friendly?

Yes, Hillview welcomes dogs — up to two of them, and there's no extra charge for either. The cottage sits on a working farm with open countryside all around, and there's an enclosed lawned garden plus an outdoor wash-down area for dogs and boots after a muddy outing.

  • Are dogs allowed at Hillview year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions, so dogs appear to be welcome whenever the cottage is available to book. It's always worth confirming directly with the owners if you're planning a trip at an unusual time of year.

  • What should I know before visiting Hillview with my dog?

The most important thing to be aware of is that dogs must be kept on the lead at all times — this is a working sheep and dairy farm, and the owners are firm on that rule. It's worth planning your week with that in mind, though the country lanes and farm views make for pleasant lead walking if your dog is used to it.
