Eglinton Country Park: The Corsehill Circuit
North Ayrshire
Eglinton Country Park covers more than 400 hectares on the northern edge of Irvine, and entry is free. Dogs can walk off lead on much of this level circuit, though the paths are shared with cyclists, horse riders and anglers, and a lead is sensible near the farmland and the river when it runs high. The North Ayrshire Ranger Service waymarks three walks from the visitor centre, and the Corsehill Circuit is the middle one: a 5.6km loop that the rangers grade as level throughout, mostly on hard standing with some dirt paths. It passes the ruins of Eglinton Castle and the Tournament Bridge, crosses the river on a bouncy suspension bridge, and picks up relics of the old estate, including the original stone bridge, the entrance to the old stable block and a disused railway tunnel. The route runs through woodland, along the river and past farmland, with a chance of herons, buzzards and even salmon. Allow about an hour and a quarter.
This is an easy, dog friendly loop with lots of space. In the woods and along the river a dog with good recall can have some freedom, but the park is shared with cyclists, horse riders and anglers, and the route passes farmland, so keep a lead handy and use it near fields, the play areas and the visitor centre. The river gives water, though keep dogs out of it when it is running high. Parking by the visitor centre is by donation, and there are toilets and a cafe beside it.

Can dogs be off lead at Eglinton Country Park: The Corsehill Circuit?
Dogs can be off lead on much of the circuit, particularly through the woods and along the river, where those with good recall can enjoy some real freedom.
