From the front of Muirston Farmhouse the ground falls away over rolling fields to the sea, with Arran on the horizon. It is a spacious, dog friendly farmhouse for eight adults and an infant, set on a working beef and sheep farm in the Ayrshire countryside west of Cumnock, and it welcomes two small dogs.

Downstairs there is a big kitchen with an Aga, a separate dining room for everyone at once, a living room, a utility and two king bedrooms beside the family bathroom. Two doubles are upstairs, and there is a stair gate for the dogs or the baby. The enclosed garden at the back has furniture and a barbecue, and it is the dogs' own ground; the wood-fired hot tub sits out at the front, looking at the view.

Because the farm runs sheep and cattle, the rule here is a lead on every dog at all times, and that includes the lanes and fields round about. The farmhouse also has the use of the owners' private fishing loch, which takes paddle boards too. By evening it is a house for a big table, the Aga warm, two small dogs underneath, and the hot tub fire going at the front.

Dumfries House, with 2,000 acres of designed grounds and walks through them, is a short drive, and so is Auchinleck. Ayr and Prestwick have long sandy beaches for a dog on the lead, Culzean Castle stands on its clifftop further down the coast, and the Galloway Forest Park, with its dark skies, is half an hour south.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Farmhouse Holidays - Muirston Farmhouse dog friendly?

Yes, Muirston Farmhouse welcomes dogs — up to two small dogs can join you for your stay. They'll have the run of the enclosed back garden, and there's a stair gate to help manage where they roam inside the house.

  • Are dogs allowed at Farmhouse Holidays - Muirston Farmhouse year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's best to check directly with the owners when you book to confirm availability for your dates.

  • What should I know before visiting Farmhouse Holidays - Muirston Farmhouse with my dog?

Because Muirston is a working beef and sheep farm, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times — this applies throughout the farmhouse grounds, and on the lanes and fields surrounding it. It's worth bearing in mind that the rule is firm given the livestock, so this stay suits dogs who are comfortable and well-behaved on the lead. The enclosed back garden gives them a safe space to relax, and there's plenty of dog-friendly exploring to be done further afield, including beaches at Ayr and Prestwick where dogs are welcome on leads.
