Llangollen, Denbighshire
Hydra is one of the newer Shacks, with impressive views of the Dee Valley and a brand new outdoor bath. Dogs are welcome, on the lead, as up to twenty sheep share its enclosed field.
Hydra is one of the newer Shacks, hidden away above the Dee Valley with nothing but wildlife for neighbours, and you feel your shoulders drop the moment you arrive. It is a dog friendly haven for two, with impressive views of the valley and the mountains of North Wales all around.
Hydra stands within an enclosed field but is not directly fenced off, and up to 20 sheep often share the field, so dogs stay on the lead outside. You park beside the farm's outbuilding and walk about 100m down a short hill, closing the gates behind you.
Curl up on the king size bed with a good book, play a board game or two, and end the day with a soak under the stars in the brand new outdoor bath. The wood burner keeps the cabin cosy, and the dog, after an afternoon of watching the sheep, will be asleep long before you are.
Llangollen is five minutes by car, or an hour on foot, with Gales wine bar and the Cornmill, where the decks sit over the river and steam trains come and go from the station opposite. Horseshoe Falls, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and the Llangollen History Trail all make fine walks with the dog, and the Shacks wild sauna is a three minute drive.

Book with ShacksFrequently Asked Questions
Is Hydra dog friendly?
Yes, dogs are welcome at Hydra, but with one important caveat: the cabin shares its field with up to twenty sheep, so it's best suited to dogs that are steady around livestock. Outside the cabin, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, as the field is enclosed but the cabin itself is not separately fenced off.
Are dogs allowed at Hydra year round?
The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so there's nothing to suggest they aren't welcome throughout the year. That said, it's always worth confirming directly with the host when you book, particularly if you're visiting during lambing season when the sheep in the field may need extra consideration.
What should I know before visiting Hydra with my dog?
The most important thing to know is that dogs must be kept on a lead whenever they're outside, from the moment you leave the car park and walk the 100 metres down to the cabin. The field is shared with a flock of sheep, so this really is a stay for a calm, lead-happy dog rather than one who finds livestock exciting. On the plus side, Llangollen is just five minutes away and offers good walking options, including the flat canal towpath and the steeper climb up to Castell Dinas Bran.
