Keepers Cottage - Hoddom

Lockerbie, Dumfries and Galloway

Dogs are free to roam within the property grounds. That is the owner's own wording for Keepers Cottage, and it is a more generous sentence than most dog friendly cottages manage: not a garden the dogs are allowed into, but ground they are trusted with. Two of them come on the booking, and the cottage is a one bedroom stone building on the old Hoddom estate outside Lockerbie.

Inside it is built for two and nothing more. A double and a shower room, both on the ground floor, and a living space with a wood burner at the centre of it and the first basket of logs already in. The enclosed garden has seating and catches the quiet. A dog that has spent an afternoon in Solway mud comes back to a single level and a warm floor, which is the arrangement an older dog would vote for.

The estate does the rest. Hoddom is old parkland running down to the River Annan, the castle grounds sit behind the cottage with a pub inside them, and there is fishing water for anyone who wants it. Most nights here reduce to the same three things: the burner lit, two dogs steaming gently in front of it, and nobody willing to be the one who starts dinner.

Galloway opens west in a long run of estuary, forest and small rocky bays. Rockcliffe is 17 miles on and stays open to dogs, with the coast path carrying round the headland from it. Inland, Annandale climbs towards the Moffat hills on quiet lanes. This is walking country that has never been crowded, which is the whole argument for the south.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Keepers Cottage - Hoddom dog friendly?

Keepers Cottage is genuinely dog friendly — the owners describe dogs as free to roam within the property grounds, which goes further than many places that simply allow dogs into a designated garden. Two dogs are welcome on a booking, and the single-level layout with a wood burner makes it a particularly comfortable setup for dogs after a muddy day out.

  • Are dogs allowed at Keepers Cottage - Hoddom year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and nothing in the description suggests limits on when you can bring them. If year-round availability matters to your plans, it's worth confirming directly with the owner when you book.

  • What should I know before visiting Keepers Cottage - Hoddom with my dog?

The cottage takes up to two dogs and sits on the old Hoddom estate outside Lockerbie, with parkland running down to the River Annan and the old castle grounds nearby — so there's good walking close to the door. The enclosed garden and single-level interior are a practical bonus, especially if you're travelling with an older dog. Rockcliffe on the Solway coast is around 17 miles away and stays open to dogs, with a coastal path round the headland, and the Annandale and Moffat hills are accessible inland for longer days out.
