The garden wall at Little Millhayes is 6ft high, and so are both of its gates. That is the detail that matters most to anyone bringing three dogs, which this dog friendly cottage in the Exe Valley hamlet of Upexe welcomes, and it turns the large garden behind the house into a properly secure piece of ground.

Inside there is space to spread out. The living room has two three-seater sofas facing an electric stove, with patio doors straight onto the garden. The dining area has old beams that sit under 6ft and a step down into the kitchen, so tall guests learn to duck quickly. The main bedroom, with a super king bed, is on the ground floor beside a walk-in shower, which suits a dog that sleeps where you sleep. The second bedroom, a twin, is up a carpeted metal spiral staircase.

A table and chairs sit on the patio under a gazebo, and it is where mornings go: coffee outside, three dogs working the edges of the garden, nothing on the far side of that wall but farmland. There is a lockable barn off the garden with a tumble dryer in it, handy for towels after a muddy walk.

Upexe lies between the villages of Thorverton and Silverton, among lanes and farmland in the valley of the Exe, with Exeter's cathedral city a short drive south. Haldon Forest, with its long waymarked trails through the pines, makes an easy day out with the dogs, and Dartmoor, Exmoor and the Blackdown Hills are all within reach for bigger walking.
