Lochranza Lodge Steading was a farmhouse in 1888; the conversion kept the shape and replaced everything else with colour and considered luxury. Sleeping eight over four bedrooms and three bathrooms at the quiet north end of Arran, it is a five star dog friendly base with one dog welcome and an enclosed garden through the lounge's French doors.
The ground floor is one big sociable space, kitchen through dining to a lounge with a wood burner, wooden floors underfoot and those doors letting the dog choose between hearth and grass. Bold walls and proper fittings run throughout: an island house that has been finished, not just furnished.
Lochranza does its evening show over the bay: the ruined castle on its spit, boats at anchor, and otters and seals working the shoreline for anyone strolling the coastal path with a dog before bed. The Isle of Arran Distillery is 1 mile along the shore, which settles the question of the nightcap.
