Maran is a converted barn on the green at Sinderby, one of four on the same yard, and what separates it is what the owners let you do outside. A marked route runs from the door through their own farmland, and there is a hen pen you are welcome to take eggs from. Four people, two dogs, dog friendly, with stone floors throughout and an enclosed patio with a hot tub on it.
Inside is one large space under high ceilings, coats and boots dropped at the door and stone underfoot from there on, which with heating beneath it is the best surface a wet dog will meet all year. A long wooden table with bench seating takes the middle of the room. The lounge is separate, with a wood burner and a piano in it, which is either a feature or a warning depending on the party.
Somebody is at the piano and getting away with it because the doors are shut. Out on the patio the hot tub is going and both dogs have placed themselves where the steam reaches and the water does not. The hens are audible over the wall. Upstairs the Juliet balconies stand open on two king bedrooms nobody will use for another two hours.
Sinderby is a green and a lane in the flat country between the Dales and the Moors, each about 12 miles off. Thirsk is the town to go to: a cobbled market square, a racecourse on the edge of it, and the veterinary practice James Herriot wrote about still standing where it stood. Dogs walk the beck through the town, and the lanes around Sinderby are quiet enough to be walked instead of driven.
