Nick and Lisa, who own Millers Rest, will tell you where to walk and where the seals are, and they leave doggy extras waiting. The cottage is a dog friendly barn conversion at Sutton near Stalham, set back out of sight beside the old windmill, for four people and two dogs, with more dogs possible if you ask first.

Its garden is its own, private, and enclosed, a square of lawn with decking and a patio laid out with furniture. The decking is the bit that gets used. Coffee in the morning with the dogs nosing along the fence, a glass of something in the evening with them flat out on the boards. Inside it is contemporary and open plan, with underfloor heating, a kingsize bedroom with a shower room of its own, a twin room, and a second shower room.

This is a good cottage for people who move about under their own steam. There is a bike store, and a shared equipment store for the rest of the kit. The Weavers Way long distance path runs through nearby Stalham, a good line for walking a dog or cycling, and the three pubs and the water at Sutton Staithe are all within a mile. The Staithe is where the River Ant leads out onto the Broads, so the water is there rather than at the cottage.

The coast is a short drive east. Sea Palling has a wide sandy beach backed by dunes, and further south at Horsey the grey seals come ashore to pup over the winter, when parts of the beach close and viewing points take over. A dog who likes sand will be happy anywhere between them.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Mill Cottages - Millers Rest dog friendly?

Yes, Millers Rest is a dog-friendly barn conversion near Stalham in Norfolk, welcoming up to two dogs as standard. If you have more than two, it's worth asking the owners Nick and Lisa directly, as additional dogs may be possible by arrangement.

  • Are dogs allowed at Mill Cottages - Millers Rest year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs at the cottage itself, so it appears to be dog-friendly year-round. Do bear in mind that nearby Horsey Beach has seasonal closures over winter when the grey seals come ashore to pup, so parts of that beach will be off-limits during that period.

  • What should I know before visiting Mill Cottages - Millers Rest with my dog?

The cottage has its own private enclosed garden with a lawn and decking, so your dogs can roam outside without worry. Nick and Lisa are on hand to point you toward the best local walks, and they leave doggy extras waiting for your arrival — a thoughtful touch. The Weavers Way long distance path is nearby for good stretching walks, and the sandy beach at Sea Palling is just a short drive east.
