Chilcompton, Somerset
A five bedroom house for eleven at Chilcompton between Bath and Wells, with a large enclosed lawn, a hot and cold dog wash and two dogs welcome.
Eleven people, five bedrooms, three generations and two dogs: Moorlands, in the village of Chilcompton between Bath and Wells, was refurbished in 2022 as a dog friendly house for families who want everyone under one roof. The garden is large, mostly lawn, and there is a hot and cold dog wash round the side.
A river runs around the garden. The owners have fenced it off and enclosed the garden, and they ask that children and animals are supervised at all times, so the dogs go out with someone rather than on their own. Within that, there is a great deal of lawn for the dogs, two seating areas, a patio and barbecue, and a vegetable garden that guests are welcome to use.
Inside, the hall rises to a vaulted double height ceiling with a piano and a reading nook. Living, dining and cooking all happen in one long open room with a real flame gas fire and big patio doors over the garden, and downstairs there is also a double bedroom with its own en suite and a door straight out to a terrace. Four more bedrooms lead off the galleried landing upstairs, including bunks for the children, with a slipper bath in one bathroom. By evening the grandparents have the fire, the children have the piano, and the dogs, freshly washed, have the floor between them.
Wells, England's smallest city, is a short drive away, and the Mendips above it hold Ebbor Gorge, a wooded ravine with good walking for dogs. Bath is in the other direction, while Glastonbury Tor and Cheddar Gorge each make a day out of their own.
