Constable Burton is a handful of estate houses and a hall on the road into Wensleydale, and Mouse Manor stands in the fields beyond them. It is on one floor throughout, which makes it dog friendly in the practical sense as well as the licensed one: two dogs as standard, three if the owners agree, and nothing between any of them and the enclosed garden but a door. Floor to ceiling windows run the length of the long side and the dale is in all of them.

One room holds the living space, the lounge at the far end under those windows with a wood burner going. Beneath the dining table is a full size pool table; you flip the top. The super king keeps a bathroom with an elliptical bath and an infrared sauna in it, and the twin its own shower room. Between the two, the dogs get stone.

The single floor is the thing to buy this for. An older dog and an older person both get an easy week out of it, and a footpath leaves straight from the property so the day's first walk needs no car. Up to three dogs by arrangement. The hot tub stands on the terrace facing open country and nothing overlooks it.

Constable Burton Hall keeps a garden that opens to the public in spring, terraced towards water with a rockery and a great many bulbs in it. West of that the dale proper begins, and Coverdale turns south, a side valley with one road, a scatter of farms and open moor at the head. Dogs are loose on most of that ground, and the walking from the door starts on a footpath and not a verge.
