Somebody put a games room in the garden and then put a wood burner in the games room. Oak Barn at Starbotton has a bar in there too, a cooler and a multi games table, and it is where the party ends up. Eight sleep in the barn, two dogs come with them, and the ground it stands on is fully enclosed, which is what dog friendly has to mean at this size.

The barn is built upside down. The ground floor holds two of the bedrooms, a king and a twin sharing a bathroom, with the dining room beside them. Living space is above: a lounge under open oak beams with a wood burner at its middle, a kitchen across the hall with an island and stools. Coats and wellies hang in the entrance hall, which with two dogs off the fell is why it is that size.

Ten at night in the games room. The burner has been going an hour, somebody is losing at air hockey and refusing to accept it, and both dogs gave up on the noise and are flat under the bar. In the house the fire upstairs is down to embers. A balcony opens off the top bedroom, and at this hour it shows nothing but the outline of the fell.

Starbotton is a dozen houses and a lane between Kettlewell and Buckden, and the dale is narrow enough here that the fells stand over the roofs. Buckden Pike rises east. Above Buckden the valley turns into Langstrothdale, where the Wharfe runs over limestone shelves in a chain of falls and pools that dogs can be let loose along. The road that way is single track and arrives nowhere much.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Oak Barn - Starbotton dog friendly?

Yes, Oak Barn welcomes up to two dogs. The garden is fully enclosed, which makes it a genuinely secure space for dogs to move around freely — a real bonus for a property sleeping eight.

  • Are dogs allowed at Oak Barn - Starbotton year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions, so we'd recommend contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your dates. What we can say is that the barn is well set up for dogs at any time of year, with an enclosed garden and plenty of walking country on the doorstep.

  • What should I know before visiting Oak Barn - Starbotton with my dog?

The barn takes a maximum of two dogs, so it's worth confirming this fits your group before booking. The entrance hall is generously sized specifically with muddy dogs in mind — ideal after a walk on the fell or along Langstrothdale, where the Wharfe runs over limestone shelves and dogs can be let loose along the riverside paths above Buckden.
