Langstrothdale Chase Walk from Buckden

North Yorkshire

Dog Friendly Rating: 8/10 A moderate Upper Wharfedale circuit linking Buckden with Cray, Yockenthwaite and Hubberholme through the ancient hunting forest of Langstrothdale Chase.

The Langstrothdale Chase walk from Buckden is a beautifully varied dog friendly circular through some of the prettiest hamlets in Upper Wharfedale. From the Buckden car park you climb a steep stony track onto Buckden Rake for superb views down the dale, then contour across fellside to Cray with its packhorse bridge, drop into Langstrothdale at Yockenthwaite and follow the infant River Wharfe through Hubberholme back to the start.

The climb out of Buckden is rough and rocky for the first half mile, then eases to good tracks and riverside paths that can get muddy after rain. Sheep and occasional cattle graze the pastures and fells throughout the year, so leads are needed past livestock, and the small road crossings at Cray and Hubberholme need care. Buckden is one of the best-equipped Dales villages for a walk of this length, with a village shop, the Buck Inn, public toilets at the car park and the George Inn at Hubberholme as a classic halfway stop.

There are stretches where dogs can enjoy more freedom, but leads are needed throughout the sections where sheep and occasional cattle graze the pastures and fells — which applies across much of the route. There are also small road crossings at Cray and Hubberholme that require care, so it's worth keeping your dog close at those points.
