The Old Brewery Coach House is a Grade II listed stone coach house for two at Melkridge, a hamlet in the Tyne Valley a mile from Hadrian's Wall. One dog is welcome at this dog friendly hideaway, the garden is enclosed, and there is an unfenced pond in it, which is the first thing any dog owner needs to know.

For a dog that ignores water it is simply part of the scenery. For one that goes straight in, it means going out into the garden together rather than opening the door and leaving it to explore. Otherwise the garden is an easy place to be, set out with seats, a table and a barbecue, and it sits in a secluded spot beside the owners' home with open views across the Northumberland countryside.

The ground floor is a living room and kitchen in one, with a separate toilet, and a conservatory with an electric fire, which is where the evenings go: the dog on the floor, the fire on, and the light going down over the fields beyond the glass. Upstairs is a double bedroom and a bathroom with a bath. The owners put extras for the dog in the welcome pack, and will supply a stair gate if asked.

The Wall is the reason most people come. Vindolanda, Sycamore Gap and the fort at Housesteads are all within a few miles, and a dog can follow the line of the Wall along the crags for as long as its legs allow. Hexham, with its abbey, is along the valley to the east, and the Cumbrian border is not far west.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Old Brewery Coach House dog friendly?

Yes, Old Brewery Coach House welcomes one dog. It's a genuine dog-friendly stay — the owners include extras for your dog in the welcome pack, and a stair gate is available on request if you'd rather keep them off the upper floor.

  • Are dogs allowed at Old Brewery Coach House year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owners directly to confirm availability for your dates. Given the nature of the property as a dedicated dog-friendly hideaway, it appears set up to welcome dogs as a matter of course.

  • What should I know before visiting Old Brewery Coach House with my dog?

The most important thing to be aware of is that the enclosed garden contains an unfenced pond — fine if your dog isn't interested in water, but worth keeping in mind if yours tends to dive straight in. The owners are clearly aware of this, so just factor it into how you manage garden time, and you'll find it an otherwise easy and comfortable place to stay with a dog.
