Behind the cottage there is a steam railway station, and the merchant's own note says it takes dogs. Highley is a working stop on the Severn Valley line, full sized locomotives and a visitor shed of them, and it is not a drive away or a day out but the thing at the back of the building. Old Ship Cottage sleeps eight at Highley in south Shropshire, dog friendly, its four bedrooms spread over two upper floors, three bathrooms, an enclosed garden. A railway you can take a dog onto is a rarer thing than a railway.

Inside it has been done properly without being stripped of what it was. Beams show in the lounge, a wood burner sits at the quiet end, and the kitchen keeps a breakfast bar as well as a table because eight people never eat at one moment. Two of the four bedrooms are on the second floor, which is where whoever arrives last ends up, and three dogs will have decided which sofa is theirs long before that.

Something is being got ready down the hill. There is a smell of coal on the air before there is any sound, then a whistle, and three dogs raise their heads in the same second and put them down again in the next. By Wednesday nobody looks up at all.

Out of Highley the Severn runs wooded on both banks towards Bewdley, wide, slow and green, with a three quarter mile fishing beat on the cottages' own stretch. Bridgnorth stands upstream at the other end of the line, a town in two halves with a cliff railway joining them. Three dogs get riverbank, a forest edge and a platform to stand on.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Old Ship Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Old Ship Cottage welcomes up to three dogs. There's an enclosed garden for them to use safely, and the cottage itself sounds like a place where dogs make themselves very much at home — the description mentions they'll have claimed their favourite sofa well before the last guests have found their bedrooms.

  • Are dogs allowed at Old Ship Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and nothing in the details suggests otherwise. If you want to confirm availability for specific dates, it's always worth checking directly with the owner.

  • What should I know before visiting Old Ship Cottage with my dog?

Up to three dogs are welcome, and the enclosed garden means you don't have to worry about them the moment you step outside. One genuinely useful detail: the Severn Valley Railway station sits directly behind the cottage, and the owner has confirmed dogs are allowed on the trains — which is a rarer thing than it sounds, and opens up easy trips to Bridgnorth and Bewdley without needing the car. The River Severn is close by too, with wooded riverbanks and a fishing beat on the cottage's own stretch.
