The dog goes in by the utility door, the correct entrance for a dog, and before anybody has found a light switch it has been through the hall, discovered the cinema room and come back. Prospect House is a farmhouse above Greetland on the Calderdale hills, dog friendly with a single dog allowed, and its garden is enclosed, terraced and looking at a long way of West Yorkshire.

The kitchen is the middle of it, an AGA at one end and an island big enough to build a Sunday lunch on, the dining room and its chandelier through the doorway. Two sitting rooms follow, one with vaulted ceilings and the country in the windows, the other a snug holding a wood burner, deep sofas and a floor a dog is allowed on. Upstairs, three bedrooms share three bathrooms.

Six people, one dog and no shortage of places to put either. The king and one double keep en-suite shower rooms, so a single bedroom uses the family bathroom, and the front courtyard is gated while the garden behind climbs to a play area with swings. A wood fired hot tub sits between them. This is a house for a family that wants room to spread rather than a cottage to squeeze into.

Halifax is 3 miles down the hill and earns the trip for the Piece Hall alone, a Georgian cloth market with a courtyard the size of a town square inside it. Shibden Hall and its park stand above. The other way, the Calderdale Way threads 50 miles of moor and valley through mill villages, and a dog can join a section of it at the end of the lane.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Prospect House - Halifax dog friendly?

Yes, Prospect House welcomes dogs — one dog is allowed. The house has an enclosed terraced garden, and one of the sitting rooms has a floor dogs are permitted on, complete with deep sofas and a wood burner for cosy evenings.

  • Are dogs allowed at Prospect House - Halifax year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your dates. What's clear is that the setup — enclosed garden, dog-friendly interiors and direct access to the Calderdale Way — suits a visit in any season.

  • What should I know before visiting Prospect House - Halifax with my dog?

Only one dog is permitted at Prospect House, so it's not the right fit if you're travelling with more than one. Dogs enter through the utility door rather than the main entrance, and while one sitting room is specifically dog-friendly, it's worth checking with the property about which other areas of the house are open to your dog. On the upside, the garden is enclosed and the Calderdale Way is accessible from the end of the lane, giving you 50 miles of moor and valley walking on the doorstep.
