Shibden Park and Beacon Hill Circular
West Yorkshire
Shibden Hall is a timber-framed house on the eastern edge of Halifax where dogs go on a lead near the hall, cafe and formal gardens but can range more freely once clear of them, dating back to around 1420 and home to the Lister family for more than 300 years. Its best known resident, the diarist Anne Lister, commissioned the terraced gardens, cascades and boating lake in the 1830s, and the hall and estate, now owned by Calderdale Council, reached a wide audience through the BBC and HBO series Gentleman Jack. The park opened to the public in 1926. This 4.5km circuit from the Mereside car park by the lake takes in the Mere, the Wilderness and the ancient woodland of Cunnery Wood, then climbs out of the park to Beacon Hill, the steep hillside above Halifax with long views over the town and the Calder valley, before dropping back into the Shibden valley. Expect a stiff climb to Beacon Hill, and woodland paths with roots, stone steps and mud.
This is a dog friendly walk and Shibden is one of the best dog parks in Calderdale. Cunnery Wood, the Wilderness and the open parkland away from the formal areas are good for off-lead running, while dogs should be on a lead near the cafe, the play areas, the hall and the formal gardens. Keep your dog out of the Mere, where the banks are very muddy and ducks and geese gather. The Mereside cafe is dog friendly, especially its outdoor seating. Only assistance dogs may enter the hall.

The Mereside café welcomes dogs, particularly at its outdoor seating, and the wider park offers a good mix of woodland, open parkland and hillside paths to explore together. Can dogs be off lead at Shibden Park and Beacon Hill Circular?
Dogs can enjoy good off-lead freedom in Cunnery Wood, the Wilderness and the open parkland areas away from the formal gardens. You'll need to keep your dog on a lead near the café, the hall, the play areas and the formal gardens. It's worth bearing in mind that the Mere's banks are very muddy and attract ducks and geese, so it's best to keep dogs out of the water there.
What should I know before visiting Shibden Park and Beacon Hill Circular with my dog?
This 4.5km circuit includes a stiff climb to Beacon Hill as well as woodland paths with tree roots, stone steps and patches of mud, so it's worth coming prepared with sturdy footwear and keeping an eye on your dog on the steeper sections.
