The first door opens on a boot room and the second on a bathroom, a sequence somebody worked out after watching two dogs come up from a river. Riverbank Cottage is a dog friendly period cottage for five at Rhewl, built on the Dee's own bank with an enclosed garden above it. Whatever happens on the walk stays in the first two rooms of the house.

Past them the kitchen takes light from both ends, and bifold doors shut the lounge off or open it. The burner comes with a first basket of logs. Upstairs are two bedrooms, a double and a triple bunk putting a double under a single, with a shower room across the landing. Two dogs will choose the rug nearest that burner and defend it.

Gardens on a riverbank are usually a compromise between the view and the fence. This one is not. The enclosed part is up top and level: lawn, shrubs, a raised paved patio, a table and a BBQ, looking straight down the valley. Below it on its own terrace sits a hot tub fired by wood rather than electricity, slower to heat and better for it. Two dogs stay behind the boundary throughout and still get the river to watch.

Dippers work the shallows and the Dee goes past fast enough to hear from the patio. Upstream the road climbs to the Horseshoe Pass, bending under Llantysilio Mountain with heather running to the skyline both ways. High open country with sheep on it, so a lead up there and a long view for everybody else. At valley level the lanes are empty enough to walk two dogs without meeting a car.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Riverbank Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Riverbank Cottage welcomes two dogs. The cottage has been thoughtfully set up with them in mind — there's a boot room just inside the front door, followed by a bathroom, so muddy or wet dogs can be sorted out before they reach the rest of the house.

  • Are dogs allowed at Riverbank Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and the setup — a wood-fired hot tub, a burner with logs, and an enclosed garden — suggests it's well suited to year-round visits. If you want to confirm availability for specific dates, it's worth checking directly with the property.

  • What should I know before visiting Riverbank Cottage with my dog?

The enclosed garden is secure and sits above the river, so your dogs can take in the view safely. If you're heading up to the Horseshoe Pass or onto Llantysilio Mountain, be aware that there are sheep on the higher ground, so dogs will need to be on a lead up there. At valley level, the lanes are quiet enough to walk two dogs comfortably.
