Skoggins Cottage stands at Healaugh, a Saxon village of a few dozen houses on the north side of Swaledale, the green beside it and the fell behind. Four people, two dogs, and a shower room for each bedroom. The entrance hall is laid in Yorkshire stone, a dog friendly floor in a cottage where the walking starts at the door, and the lounge beyond is one step down with a wood burner in it.
That lounge sits at the back with the hillside filling the window, and the step down puts it further from the road than it really is. The kitchen and diner is along the hall, farmhouse in style with a beamed ceiling and a range oven. Above, the king has an en-suite shower and the twin an open framed ceiling. The enclosed garden looks straight up the dale and the dogs can be turned loose in it at any hour.
Both dogs came in off the fell twenty minutes ago and neither has moved since. One is on the stone in the hall because it is cool there. The other has taken the rug by the burner because it is not. Somebody is making tea and asking whether anybody fancies walking to Reeth later. The answer is clearly no.
Swaledale is the narrowest of the big dales and the least travelled, walled into small fields with a stone field barn standing in nearly every one, a pattern found nowhere else in England on this scale. Reeth is a mile and a half down the road around a large sloping green. Upstream it runs through Muker and Gunnerside to Keld, and dogs take the length of that on lane, riverbank and fell.
