Couples and their dogs are who Slate Cottage is for. It is a beautiful stone cottage in the heart of Pennal, full of period charm with contemporary twists, and a base for Snowdonia's mountains and coast. Two dogs are welcome, and the enclosed garden is dog friendly, with a fire pit for the evenings.

The kitchen and diner is to the right as you come in, well equipped, with the dining table by the window and a door out to the back garden, so a meal can come with birdsong. After a full day out, the lounge has a feature fireplace with a wood burner, comfortable seating, a Smart TV and DVDs, and the dogs settle down by the fire. The bedroom is on the first floor, with a king size bed and a Smart TV, and there is a stylish shower room.

Outside, steps lead up from the kitchen to the attractive enclosed garden, contemporary in design with beachy gravel, feature planting and a decked patio with a table and chairs. It is a real sun trap with birdsong from the nearby trees, and the fire pit stretches the evening out while the dogs doze on the deck. A lockable shed takes bikes and golf clubs.

Machynlleth, just over 1 mile away, has independent shops, the MOMA gallery and a weekly street market, and Aberdovey, 6.5 miles off, has a sandy beach, a tidal estuary and a championship links course. Ynys-Hir RSPB Reserve, the Dyfi Osprey Project and the steam train to Dolgoch Falls are all close, and the woodland and coastal paths give the dogs walking all year round.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Slate Cottage Pennal dog friendly?

Yes, Slate Cottage is dog friendly and welcomes up to two dogs — a generous allowance for a cottage that sleeps just two people. The enclosed garden is a real bonus, sitting above the cottage with a paved patio and fire pit, and because it's fully enclosed you can leave the door open while you cook.

  • Are dogs allowed at Slate Cottage Pennal year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so there's nothing to suggest they aren't welcome throughout the year. It's worth contacting the owner directly to confirm availability for your dates.

  • What should I know before visiting Slate Cottage Pennal with my dog?

The main thing to be aware of is the staircase — the owner flags it as steep, and the only bedroom is at the top of it, so it's worth thinking carefully if you have a heavy or older dog who struggles with stairs. The ground floor and enclosed garden are easily accessible, and the garden is reached via outside steps up from the kitchen door rather than a ground-level exit.
