One road goes into Polruan and it stops at the quay, which is most of the reason the village stays as quiet as it does. Sunset View stands above all that, a contemporary single storey house of four bedrooms sleeping eight, three dogs welcome, and the dog friendly answer to a village otherwise composed almost entirely of steps.
Every room comes off one wide hall full of natural light. Four bedrooms open from it, two of them en suite, with a third bathroom holding a freestanding bath and a separate double shower. At the far end the living space runs open plan, and a wall of glass folds back onto the outside, so three dogs can be in or out of the house without anybody rising to arrange it.
Large parties with dogs and a spread of ages are where this one earns its keep. Polruan is built on a hill, and a house with no internal stairs and secure ground on the same level as the living room takes away both of the things that usually make a village like this hard work. That lawn is fenced and looks over the water, with a patio and a BBQ at the house end of it.
The quay and the tidal beach are down the hill, and the village holds enough between here and there that a week can pass without the car moving. A passenger ferry crosses to Fowey every quarter of an hour. Out of the village the coast path towards Lantic Bay climbs hard and pays for it, and the car ferry at Bodinnick opens up the wooded river walking upstream, which is the gentler option with a dog.
