Dolgellau, Gwynedd
A characterful 18th century stone schoolhouse in the heart of Dolgellau sleeping five, with an enclosed stone walled garden by the River Arran and two dogs welcome.
Tawelfa, one of over 200 listed buildings in Dolgellau, is a former schoolhouse dating back to the late 1700s, and now this beautiful stone house makes a characterful, dog friendly stay at the centre of the town. Five people and two dogs share it, with Snowdonia National Park all around and the Mawddach Trail and Cader Idris close at hand.
The original features are the reason to linger indoors. A spectacular 12 foot sash window spans all three storeys, and the flagstone floors, exposed beams, solid oak bedroom wall and huge inglenook fireplace sit alongside antique furniture, textiles and lighting, much of it local to the area. In the lounge, with a first basket of logs provided, the wood burner gets lit for a cosy night in and both dogs claim the hearthside.
The stylish kitchen opens onto the rear garden, which is enclosed and stone walled, with feature planting and patio furniture, a garden for families and the dog to enjoy from sunrise to sunset. The River Arran flows just behind the property, and its gentle sound carries over supper outside, the dogs dozing by the patio table. Upstairs, a double and a stylish shower room take the first floor, and the second has another double with a feature oak wall, a beautiful bathroom and a single, with lovely views over the town to wake up to.
From the door, the dogs can head out through the lanes and squares of the old town, past independent cafes and shops, and on to walking and cycling trails including the Mawddach Trail. A water taxi runs between the beaches at Fairbourne and Barmouth, and King Arthur's Labyrinth takes you underground into the legends of Wales.

Book with holidaycottages.co.ukFrequently Asked Questions
Is Tawelfa dog friendly?
Yes, Tawelfa welcomes up to two dogs. It's a genuinely practical setup for dogs too — flagstone floors throughout, a walled garden that's secure enough to leave them in, and a kitchen door that opens straight out into it.
Are dogs allowed at Tawelfa year round?
The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions, so it's worth getting in touch with the owners directly to confirm availability for your dates. What's clear is that dogs are a central part of how the place is described, not an afterthought.
What should I know before visiting Tawelfa with my dog?
Two dogs are welcome, and the walled garden gives you somewhere to leave them safely while you're in the house. The location is right in the middle of Dolgellau, so evening walks are easy on a lead through the town's narrow lanes, and Cadair Idris is within a few miles for bigger days out.
