The Artist's Retreat takes its name from the studio beside it, where the owner runs painting classes. The cottage is Grade II listed and has nothing upstairs, which is what makes it dog friendly in a way a floor plan can prove. Two super king bedrooms, each with a bathroom of its own, four people and one dog. Out through the back door the garden is walled and sheltered, laid to lawn and stone, and reached without a step.

Both bedrooms convert to twins on request, which for two couples travelling together removes the usual awkward conversation. One has a bath, the other a shower. The lounge is at the front, wood burner and all, with the kitchen and dining room behind it. The dog has the run of the lot: one floor, one temperature, no door that needs closing.

Late afternoon and the light has gone amber in the walled garden. The dog is lying on warm stone with one eye open in case the studio door goes. Somebody has carried a mug out and is sitting on the step rather than in the chair. Moulton is small enough that the only sound is a tractor two fields away and a rook arguing with another rook.

Moulton is a stone village of two rows and a green, north of Richmond and a mile off the Great North Road, which has been the road north since the Romans laid it. Stanwick lies just west: 6 miles of earth rampart and ditch thrown up by the Brigantes before Rome arrived, still standing head high in places, with a lane and a church inside it. Dogs walk the whole circuit and meet almost nobody.
