The garden fence at The Barn is lined with mesh, put there for dogs, and that is a good summary of how the owner has thought about this place. A single storey dog friendly barn conversion at the edge of Ropsley, near Grantham, sleeping two with a sofa bed for a child, and taking two well behaved dogs.

Behind the barn is its enclosed garden, private to it, with seats, a table and a barbecue. A sun room looks out from it across the fields, where the owner's horses and ponies graze, so a dog has plenty to watch and needs a lead on the field paths. There is a dog wash station for the muddy return, so the worst of the fields stays outside.

The sitting room has its own stove, and the dining room, kitchen, double bedroom and bathroom are all on the one floor. At the front, outside the door and beyond the enclosed garden, is a small orchard of cherry, plum, pear and apple trees, and guests are welcome to pick what is ripe. A dog on a lead will make its own inspection of the windfalls.

A footpath leaves just 10 metres from the door into open country, and the village pub, which welcomes dogs and serves food, is five minutes away on foot. The Belton House estate near Grantham has a long circular walk through its parkland, and Rutland Water, with an easy track right round the reservoir, is an afternoon out with a dog.
