Book now

Thatch, beams and an inglenook: The Cottage at Berrick Salome is the English country cottage in its most familiar form, dog friendly, sleeping four in two double bedrooms, and set in a small village on the edge of the Chilterns in south Oxfordshire. It takes one dog, and that dog gets a large garden that goes all the way round the house.

Lawn, a patio and furniture make up the enclosed garden, and it wraps the cottage on every side, so a dog can go round the whole house and never meet a gate. A stream runs through the garden about 11 yards from the house, and it is fenced off, so a dog can be let out without anybody watching the water. The logs for the multi-fuel burner are included and there is a welcome pack with extras for the dog.

Inside it is all original character: beams throughout and a big inglenook fireplace in the living room, where the burner goes on and the dog takes the rug in front of it. The kitchen is down one step, there is a walk-in shower on the ground floor, and the two doubles are upstairs up a staircase that is steep and narrow, as cottage stairs usually are. A couple on a quiet break, or a small family with one dog, fits it well.

There are walks into the countryside straight from the village, and Swyncombe Downs in the Chilterns is a short drive away. Wittenham Clumps, the two wooded hills above the Thames, is close for a longer walk with views across south Oxfordshire, and Watlington Hill, a National Trust chalk grassland, is a good place to watch red kites while the dog investigates the slope.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, The Cottage at Berrick Salome welcomes one dog. Your dog gets a large enclosed garden that wraps all the way round the house, and inside there's a proper inglenook fireplace with a rug in front of the burner — the kind of spot a dog will claim immediately.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions, so it's worth contacting the owner directly to confirm availability for your dates. What we can say is that the cottage is set up with dogs genuinely in mind, with a welcome pack that includes extras for your dog alongside the usual amenities.

  • What should I know before visiting The Cottage with my dog?

The cottage takes one dog, so it's best suited to couples or small families travelling with a single pet. The enclosed garden is fully wrapped around the house with no gates to navigate, though there is a stream running through it about 11 yards from the house — it's fenced off, so you don't need to supervise every time your dog goes out. The stairs inside are steep and narrow in the traditional cottage style, which is worth keeping in mind if your dog comes upstairs with you.
