Warburg Nature Reserve Wildlife Walk
Oxfordshire
Warburg Nature Reserve occupies 107 hectares of Bix Bottom, a steep dry valley in the Chilterns near Henley-on-Thames, run by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. It is the richest BBOWT reserve in the three counties for orchids, with pyramidal orchid and swathes of wild marjoram and thyme on the flower-rich valley-bottom grassland in summer, and bluebells and wood anemones in the beechwoods on the slopes each spring, so dogs are asked to keep to a lead to protect them. The reserve's own Wildlife Walk is a 1.6km loop marked with badger waymarkers, climbing from the valley floor onto the wooded slopes on paths of loose flint that can be steep and muddy after rain. Red kites are a regular sight, and the reserve is also known for its exceptional range of fungi.
This is a dog friendly reserve, but dogs must stay on a lead throughout to protect the ground-nesting birds, orchids and rare butterflies that make the site so important. There is no natural water for a dog on the trail, and the climb onto the valley sides means the paths are not easy going for an older or less mobile dog. The beechwoods give reliable shade in summer, and the reserve is generally quiet away from weekends. There is a small visitor centre with a picnic area and toilets by the car park, though the access lane itself is steep and narrow. Henley-on-Thames, a short drive away, has plenty of dog-friendly cafes and pubs.

Is Warburg Nature Reserve Wildlife Walk dog friendly?
Yes, dogs are welcome at Warburg Nature Reserve, which earns a 7/10 for dog friendliness on Wildpack Collective. The 1.6km Wildlife Walk is marked with badger waymarkers and winds through a beautiful Chiltern valley and beechwoods, with red kites often overhead and plenty of interesting scents along the way. There's a picnic area by the car park, and Henley-on-Thames is a short drive away if you're looking for a dog-friendly café or pub to finish the day.
Can dogs be off lead at Warburg Nature Reserve Wildlife Walk?
Dogs must stay on a lead throughout the entire reserve, without exception. Warburg is an exceptionally important wildlife site — it's the richest reserve in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire for wild orchids, and it supports ground-nesting birds and rare butterflies that are easily disturbed. It's a rule worth respecting, given just how special the place is.
What should I know before visiting Warburg Nature Reserve Wildlife Walk with my dog?
A few things are worth bearing in mind before you head out. The paths are loose flint and can be steep and muddy after rain, and the climb onto the valley sides makes this a trickier outing for older or less mobile dogs. There's no natural water for dogs on the trail, so bring plenty with you, particularly in warmer months — though the beechwoods do offer good shade in summer. The access lane to the car park is also steep and narrow, so take it steadily on the way in.
