Houses for twelve are generally found at the far end of a farm track. This one stands in the middle of Ludlow, which changes the shape of a week entirely: the town is the amenity, nobody is driving anywhere, and a large enclosed garden sits behind the building for the two dogs who came with everybody. The Ludlow Townhouse carries five stars, is dog friendly, and puts six king bedrooms over four bathrooms. Twelve people in a town rather than down a lane is a different holiday, and the garden is what makes it work with animals.

Six kings means six couples and no compromise room, which is rarer at this size than the photographs suggest. Two lounges split the party when it wants splitting, open fires burn in both with the first basket of logs left ready, and a billiards table absorbs the end of an evening. A hot tub outside burns wood, and two dogs will supervise the lighting of it.

Late on, the house is doing three things at once. Somebody is losing at billiards under a low light, one lounge has gone quiet and the other has not, and two dogs are working the ground floor between them on the reasonable theory that food will appear in one room or the other. The garden door stays open until somebody feels the cold.

Stokesay, 6 miles north, is the best preserved fortified manor house in England, a stone hall with a timbered gatehouse in front and a church alongside, little altered since the thirteenth century. The country round it is the quiet end of the Clee hills. Two dogs get a moat, a courtyard on a lead and lanes with nothing on them.
