It is arranged sensibly: a double bedroom, a lounge, a shower room and a kitchen with enough in it to cook properly, all on one floor. Nothing anywhere needs climbing. For a dog that has slowed down, or one that has just spent hours in the back of a car, the whole cottage is available without effort.
The Dee does most of the entertaining. It runs fast and shallow past the garden over a bed of rock, loud enough to notice and not so loud that you stop hearing anything else. Somebody sits out with a book and gets very little of it read. The dog lies on the warm stone watching the water, which dogs will do for far longer than seems reasonable.
Through the gate the path follows the river into Llangollen in a few minutes and out the far side for as long as anybody wants. The canal runs above the town on a ledge fed from the Horseshoe Falls and carries on east to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which takes narrowboats over the valley on stone piers 38 metres up. Valle Crucis Abbey stands roofless in a field north of town, and Castell Dinas Bran on the hill above is a steep climb that repays it. One dog will not run short of ground here.
