The garden is the surprise. Haworth is a village of stone terraces stacked up a hill and most get a yard, but the patio doors of The Old Nook open onto a paved terrace with a firepit, then a lawn, then countryside over the wall. Part of the cottage dates to the 1600s, it sleeps six, a pair of dogs come with it, and few village terraces are this dog friendly.
Inside is exposed stone and heavy beams, three sofas turned towards a wood burner, and a country kitchen and diner alongside. A few steps go down to a cellar that does the work of a utility room and stores the bikes. The three bedrooms above were opened to the roof line, so a king, a double and a twin each sit under a vaulted ceiling, and a dog that likes a high room has the run of the floor.
Nine in the evening and the firepit has been going for an hour. The dogs have settled at the edge of the light where the terrace meets the lawn, watching the lane below and not much else. Somebody went in for a jumper and was diverted by the wood burner. Above the wall the fields fall into the valley, the village behind has gone quiet, and nobody has suggested going in.
Haworth's cobbled street climbs to the parsonage the Brontes lived in, and the moorland they wrote about starts where the last houses stop. The waterfall and the ruin at Top Withens lie along it, rough walking with almost nothing between. In the valley a steam railway still works the length of the Worth, and dogs travel on it.
