Hardcastle Crags and Gibson Mill Circular
West Yorkshire
Hardcastle Crags is a steep, wooded valley on the edge of Hebden Bridge where dogs get a paddle in Hebden Water for most of the route, cared for by the National Trust and covering more than 400 acres with around 15 miles of footpaths. Hebden Water tumbles through the valley floor, and halfway up sits Gibson Mill, a cotton mill built in the 1800s that later hosted tea dances and roller skating. This 8.4km circuit from Midgehole car park follows the river west to the mill, climbs to a higher woodland path, then drops back to the riverside past the gritstone crags that give the valley its name. There is around 196 metres of climbing, on woodland paths that are rocky, rooty and muddy in places, with short steep sections and stepping stones by the stream.
This is a dog friendly walk for dogs who love water, with Hebden Water alongside for much of the route and plenty of shallow spots for a drink or a paddle. Away from the mill there is moderate off-lead potential under the trees, but the National Trust asks for dogs to be kept under close control at all times and on a lead during the bird breeding season, 1 March to 31 July. The woodland gives good shade in summer. Paths are busy at weekends, and the stepping stones become unreliable after heavy rain, so keep your dog on a lead at crossings when the river is up. The Weaving Shed Café and toilets are at Gibson Mill.

Is Hardcastle Crags and Gibson Mill Circular dog friendly?
Hardcastle Crags scores 8 out of 10 for dog friendliness, and it's easy to see why — Hebden Water runs alongside much of the route, offering endless opportunities for a paddle or a drink. The woodland paths provide good shade in summer, and the Weaving Shed Café at Gibson Mill makes a welcome halfway stop for owners.
Can dogs be off lead at Hardcastle Crags and Gibson Mill Circular?
There's moderate off-lead potential under the trees away from the mill, but the National Trust asks that dogs are kept under close control at all times across the estate. During the bird breeding season — 1 March to 31 July — dogs must be kept on a lead throughout, and it's also worth keeping them leashed at the stepping stones when the river is running high after rain.
What should I know before visiting Hardcastle Crags and Gibson Mill Circular with my dog?
The paths here are rocky, rooty and can get muddy, with some short steep sections and stepping stones by the stream — so it's worth wearing decent footwear and keeping a close eye on your dog near the water after heavy rain. The route is popular at weekends, so expect company on the trail. Parking is at Midgehole car park, which is pay and display (cash only), though National Trust members park free, and there's an alternative at Clough Hole car park if it's busy.
