A private drive beside St Peter's church leads to The Old Rectory Coach House, which once kept the carriages for the Georgian rectory that served the parish of Yaxham. It stands in its own grounds, a detached, dog friendly house for five in mid Norfolk, with room for one dog and a quarter acre of enclosed courtyard for it.

French doors open from the living space straight onto that courtyard, which is enclosed and paved in part, with furniture and a small barbecue, and there are enclosed gardens beyond it. For one dog that is a lot of secure ground to itself. Inside, logs are supplied for the wood burner in the open plan room, and doggy extras are waiting on arrival.

The main bedroom, a king, sits downstairs alongside a bathroom and a separate wet room, which suits an older guest or an older dog who would rather not climb. Upstairs there is a twin and a single for the rest of the party. It is a quiet, secluded house, and one returning guest who has come back four times says the dog loves it as much as they do.

Yaxham sits at the centre of a network of footpaths, so the morning walk leaves from the gate. The Mid Norfolk Railway has a station in the village, Dereham is a couple of miles off, and Thetford Forest and the Brecks, where a dog can walk the pingo trail through heath and pine, are within easy reach. The coast is within the hour when the dog wants a beach.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Old Rectory Coach House dog friendly?

Yes, The Old Rectory Coach House welcomes one dog. It's a great set-up for a dog — there's a quarter acre of enclosed courtyard and gardens to roam freely, doggy extras waiting on arrival, and footpaths starting directly from the gate for morning walks.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Old Rectory Coach House year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your preferred dates. Given the enclosed outdoor space and wood burner, it seems well suited to year-round visits.

  • What should I know before visiting The Old Rectory Coach House with my dog?

The property welcomes one dog, so it's not suitable for multi-dog households. On the plus side, the setup is genuinely dog-friendly — the enclosed courtyard and gardens give a good amount of secure outdoor space, the French doors open straight out onto it, and the downstairs bedroom and bathroom arrangement works well for older dogs who'd rather skip the stairs.
