The owner of The Old Surgery remembers sitting in its waiting room as a child. For much of the twentieth century this was the doctor's surgery for Kinlochbervie, a fishing village in the far northwest of the Highlands, and it has since been renovated into a small, comfortable, dog friendly cottage for four, with two dogs welcome.

It is all on one level and kept simple. There is an open plan kitchen, dining and living room, a double bedroom, a twin room, a shower and a utility room with a washer and tumble dryer, which earns its keep after a dog has been through a few Sutherland bogs. Treats for the dogs come in the welcome pack.

Behind the house the garden is enclosed, with seating, and the owners set it up with dogs in mind. From the house you look down over Loch Inchard to the harbour, a working fishing port where boats come and go at all hours. The Old Surgery suits walkers, two or four of them, who want to be out all day and fall asleep to the sound of the harbour, the dogs curled up by the heater.

Oldshoremore Beach is close by, pale sand and clear water, with Polin and little Sheigra beyond it, and from Blairmore a track leads out to Sandwood Bay, one of the most celebrated beaches in Scotland, all of it on John Muir Trust land and a long walk out for the dogs. Durness and Kylesku are both within reach for a day's drive.

We research every description carefully and believe it to be accurate, but details can change. Please confirm anything important, especially dog rules, with the booking agent or property owner before you book.
