Oldshoremore Beach

Highlands

Dog Friendly Rating:9/10A wide, remote sandy beach near Kinlochbervie in north-west Sutherland with year-round dog access, turquoise Atlantic waters and the extraordinary emptiness of one of Scotland's most northerly west-coast beaches.

Oldshoremore Beach is a wide, remote sandy beach near Kinlochbervie in north-west Sutherland, backed by dunes and looking west across the North Atlantic. This is one of the most northerly west-facing sandy beaches on the Scottish mainland and the scenery is utterly spectacular: white sand, turquoise water, and the vast emptiness of the Atlantic to the west. Very rarely visited despite its extraordinary quality.

FROM THE AGE OF 15 TO 55 [I AM NOW 85] WE USED TO FISH LOCHS AND A RIVER IN THE WEST OF SUTHERLAND NEARLY EVERY AUGUST - WHEN THERE WAS RARELY ENOUGH WATER FOR THE FISH SO WE USED TAKE OURSELVES TO OLDSHORE MORE INSTEAD. DOG FRIENDLY : WE ALMOST LOST 2 DOGS - ONE FROM AN ADDER BITE AND THE OTHER FROM A VERY EXCITED MINIATURE DASCHUND WHO CHASED THE RABBITS THEN SWALLOWED SO MUCH SAND TRYING TO DIG THEM OUT THAT WE HAD TO MAKE A SPEEDY DRIVE TO THE VET IN LAIRG TO HAVE HER OPENED UP AND THE SAND DISLODGED. THE SUN WAS BURNING, THE SEA WAS EXHILARATING =JUST SHORT OF FREEZING, THE EXPERIENCE WAS HISTORIC. SCRAMBLING DOWN THE LITTLE PATH BEWTWEEN THE CROFTS ANTICIPATARY TO THE BEACH BROUGHT JOY IN OUR HEARTS.
